Easy Habits to Help You Save Money and Reduce Food Waste

You meant to make everyone's favorite chicken dish, but have been working late too tired to cook. Or maybe you cooked and then realized everyone's busy schedule meant no time to sit down and eat it. Throwing uneaten food into the trash each week is frustrating and expensive. We wrote about collecting left over food scraps in a previous post, but what about reducing waste overall. Here are some easy habits that will save you time and money.
Meal Plan List

Plan out your meals for the week and think about how to use any leftovers. Vegetables make a great omelet. Potatoes, onions, peppers become a tasty hash. Left over meat can go in a salad, on a sandwich or in a soup.
Shop with a list - Going down the aisles can easily distract us so write a list and stick to it.  Tell yourself you can buy one impulse item.

Bins of applesBuy the not so pretty fruit and vegetables - the odd shaped items still taste just as good, but often get passed by and thrown out.
Rotate your refrigerator - Don't push old items to the back. Create a dedicated spot for items that need to be eaten soon.
Upgrade your containers so left overs last longer and put a label with a date so you know what it is and how long its been there. Stasher Stand Up Bags We love these stand up silicone bags available from Zero Waste Store
